A group of young people who are receiving support from NDWA’s Children and Young People’s Outreach service came together today, to look at planning for their safety.
The young people, girls and boys, ranging from 7 to 12 years old, who come from all over north Derbyshire, offered their time to help themselves and other young people with safety planning.
The children have all completed a personal safety plan as part of the support they receive from their worker. The safety plan currently used is from the ‘The Hideout’ www.thehideout.org.uk which can be found on the Women’s Aid Federation of England’s website www.womensaid.org.uk
NDWA is committed to our service users, children and adults, having their say, so when the children said they wanted a safety plan that they felt was their own, their support workers were delighted to help them. Jo Riley (Chesterfield C&YP’s Outreach worker) said ’The young people felt that they wanted to adapt it to make it more personal to them, and more interesting for other children who may need to use it.’
The children’s design is based upon the original document, adding in prompts, and changing the layout in order to make the ‘Young People’s Safety Plan’ easy to conceal and carry.
The children’s work will be taken to the Derbyshire Local Safeguarding Children Board’s ‘Bounce Event’ for children and young people, Sunday 11th May at County Hall, Matlock. www.derbyshirescb.org.uk . The event will be a space to creatively consult with young people, gathering materials and ideas with which to inform the development of a Stay Safe Toolkit.
