Refuge

Our refuges are a safe, temporary place for you and your children to live when you have left an abusive relationship. The refuge staff will help you to consider the options available to you so that you can decide what you would like to do next.

What’s on offer?

• Someone to listen when you need to talk.
• Information and advice around a range of issues including; housing and homelessness, finances (benefits, debts and arrears), personal safety and refuge security, health and wellbeing, children and parenting.
• Advocacy- help you to have your voice heard within other agencies and organisations that you and your children may be involved with
• Children’s Support workers to help you and your children settle
• Children’s Art Therapist to give children and young people a space to explore their thoughts and feelings around domestic abuse
• A Specialist Domestic Abuse Health Visitor
• A private bedroom just for you and your children with its own set of keys.
• A shared kitchen/dining room with cookers, fridges, freezers, crockery, pans and cutlery for everyone to use. (We can provide separate cooking utensils if your religion requires it).
• A shared laundry area with Iron and ironing board, washing machine and tumble dryer
• Lounge with comfortable sofas and a TV and video with satellite channels which is shared with other women and their children who live in the refuge
• Some shared bathrooms and some en-suite bathrooms
• A playroom equipped with toys, games and arts and crafts materials.

Families cook for themselves and buy their own food. Everyone has to clean their own room and share the cleaning of the communal rooms. The addresses of the refuge are kept confidential.

Who is the service offered to?

All women and children who are escaping from domestic abuse.

How to contact us?

You can refer yourself by dropping in or telephoning the Advice Centre, or by talking to any NDWA worker you have contact with. Workers from other agencies/organisations can also refer you to refuge, through the Advice Centre.
